CLEARFIELD — A South Weber man who police say apparently didn't want to wait in a line of traffic for a semitrailer to back up at the Freeport Center was killed Tuesday while trying to squeeze between the trailer and rig.
Dalton Bowers, 25, was in a line of cars waiting to exit the Freeport Center just before 7:30 a.m. The cars were stopped while a trailer that had detached from the semi backed up, said Clearfield Police Lt. Kelly Bennett.
"The driver intended on backing the semi-truck, parking the vehicle parallel to the trailer," Bennett said.
Bowers reportedly tried to go around the line of traffic and maneuver between the trailer and semi. Instead, his Corolla crashed into the trailer with enough force that the 10,000 pound trailer was moved between 10 and 15 feet, Bennett said.
Witnesses of the crash tried to give medical aid to Bowers, but he died before emergency responders arrived on scene. Traffic in the area was closed off for several hours.
Excessive speed likely contributed to the catastrophic nature of the crash, according to Bennett, though he noted an investigation is ongoing.
It was not immediately known whether Bowers was an employee at the Freeport Center.
