In 2012, NSKN games released Exodus Proxima Centauri by designers Andrei Novac and Agnieszka Kopera. The game was billed as a full-fledged space opera with war, politics, technology, civilization-building and exploration. It met with great success, winning several awards.

Loyal fans have been rewarded with more. A recent expansion, Exodus Edge of Extinction, takes the game to greater levels of fun and fandom. To begin, the expansion game is loaded with more cards, cardboard tokens, ship miniatures and player boards. A wonderful new feature gives each player faction its own special powers and background story. A new set of action cards is given to each player, replacing the set in the base game.

There are 15 new political cards available, some of which grant treasured victory points for colonizing planets, and new Centaurian Resistance cards will challenge players as they fight new configurations of Centaurian ships. A favorite is the level-three Centaurian ship that contains EMP cannons. Watch out!

A new feature in this expansion is combat cards. During player combat, a card can be played that allows a player to break the rules. For example, with the combat card “Combat Training,” a player can sacrifice some population cubes to increase the chance of hitting an opponent with combat dice.

Another change from the base game is the ability to target home planets with weapons of mass destruction. Previously this was forbidden but is now an option using everything but Graviton rockets. WMD damage rolls can also be affected by different technologies that have been researched, such as strategic bombers.

There are optional rules, such as ship blocking, a bunch of new technologies that affect game play and solitaire rules, including a whole booklet of scenarios. For bling gamers, this expansion contains clear plastic stands to connect to ship miniatures. Nothing beats seeing a fleet of war cruisers flying above the board on their way to destroy a home planet.

Throw in space defense systems, clone factories, dark energy shields, EMP cannons, Hyperspace drives, spaceports and T-Modules and you have enough changes to keep the most rabid fans satisfied. Exodus Edge of Extinction is a must-have for all Exodus fans. It offers a wide variety of new options to keep things interesting. Check this one out for sure.
