SALT LAKE CITY — Utah will be the last stop on a five-day campaign swing through five Western states for Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul.
The Kentucky senator is scheduled to hold a rally at 10 a.m. Saturday at an Orem business center at 450 N. 1500 West. Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, will join Paul at the event.
Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne will also host a private fundraiser for Paul on Friday.
A BYU Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy survey this month found 33 percent of Utahns have a favorable impression of Paul, while 48 percent have an unfavorable impression. It also showed that 16 percent had no opinion and 3 percent have never heard of him.
Paul is staging rallies in Alaska, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming during the trip.
His message on the tour centers on protecting the Bill of Rights and standing up for conservative ideals that limit the power of the government, according to the Paul campaign.
Paul is the first presidential candidate to hold a public event in Utah this year.
Republican Jeb Bush was in Salt Lake City on Tuesday for a private fundraising luncheon. Democrat Hilary Clinton attended a private fundraiser in Park City earlier this month.
Mitt Romney hosted GOP hopefuls Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, former Silicon Valley executive Carly Fiorina, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at his annual summit in Deer Valley in June.
