Fresh off a pair of East Coast matches, the Wildcats return to the West for week two of action.
The Weber State University women’s soccer team face in-state rival Westminster at 5 p.m. on Friday at Dumke Field in Salt Lake City, before heading south to face Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona.
“We look forward to Friday’s game, and hope to build on the positives from last weekend,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “We know that both teams this weekend will be prepared and motivated to play us. The players have had a good week of training, and are excited for the games.”
Weber State is 1-1-0 in two previous official matches with Westminster, which is now in its first season of transition to NCAA Division II. The Griffins previously competed at the NAIA level.
The Wildcats defeated the Griffins, 2-1 at home in 2009, before suffering a last-minute 1-0 loss last season despite dominating play.
Weber State is playing at Westminster for the first time.
On Sunday, the Wildcats meet Grand Canyon University of the first time. The Lopes are in the midst of transitioning to NCAA Division I status and compete in the Western Athletic Conference.
GCU (1-0-0) defeated Big Sky Conference foe Northern Arizona in overtime in front of more than 2,500 fans in its season opener on Aug. 21, and plays host to Colorado State on Friday prior to the match against the Wildcats.
Weber State is 0-2-0, coming off an opening two step that included then-No. 7 North Carolina and Duke. These were the Wildcats’ first-ever matches against members of the Atlantic Coast Conference and their first-ever contest in the Eastern Time Zone. The Tar Heels and Blue Devils are ranked No. 5 and No. 21, respectively, in the latest NSCAA Poll released Monday.
After this weekend’s action, Weber State faces Border War Rivalry foes New Mexico State and UTEP on Sept. 4 and 6, respectively, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas.
