WEST VALLEY CITY — A man involved in a traffic accident Thursday night was killed after he tried to run across the highway and was hit by another vehicle, according to police.
Bruce Reutner, 50, of West Valley City, was traveling north on Bangerter Highway about 9:40 p.m. when a tire blew out, causing his car to spin and and hit the center divider near 3750 South, said West Valley Police Lt. Dalan Taylor.
But after another motorist stopped to check on him, police say, Reutner got out of his car and started running across the road. He was hit by a Toyota Tercel and killed.
A witness told police he believed the car was dark green, but debris collected at the scene indicated part of the car had been spray-painted white, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Anyone who has information about the vehicle can call police at 801-840-4000. The car will likely be missing pieces of its bumper, parts of the front grille and may have a broken passenger-side headlight, Vainuku said.
Police did not know Friday why Reutner darted across the road.
