HURRICANE — The man who was found dead inside a crashed semitrailer at the bottom of a ravine off state Route 59 was likely there for several days, Hurricane police said Friday.

Walter Steed, 70, of Hildale, was reportedly last seen Saturday evening and was planning to travel out of Utah to pick up a trailer for the tractor-trailer he was driving.

After not hearing from him and growing worried, a group of people were looking for Steed when they saw what appeared to be his semitrailer at the bottom of a cliff part way between Hurricane and Hildale, said Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell.

Police responded Thursday morning and found Steed's body with the semitrailer.

"It appeared the semi had been there for several days," Buell said.

Investigators discovered tire tracks that indicated the vehicle left the road, along some brush and then down the ravine, according to Buell. He said Steed was reported missing with Hildale police on Tuesday.

Police have not released the cause of the crash.
