Utah Valley University sophomore Tori Smith headed in the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to hand in-state foe Utah State University its first loss on the season and continuing senior Jessica Duffin's second shutout of the year on Friday at Clyde Field in Orem.
Utah Valley (2-1-0) took the lead late when junior defender sent a free kick to the left box, where Smith found the ball with her head and directed it to the back of the net to secure the win.
At the match, Utah Valley University set a record for most attendance at a women's soccer game at Clyde Field with 2,790 fans.
"We knew this would be a battle of two good teams fighting it out on the field. It came down to who could focus enough and execute a goal. We were able to high pressure Utah State, making it difficult for them to get out of their defensive end and get into their rhythm and that was key for us to win the ball close to their goal," head coach Brent Anderson said. "The team brought a lot of energy, but they fed off of the energy of our crowd and of the energy from the MAWL. It was big time for us to set that attendance record. I could not be happier to have the support from our fans."
The Aggies (2-1-0) held Utah Valley to just five shots on goal overall and were able to earn six offensively against the Wolverines.
The win marks senior goalkeeper Duffin's second shutout of the 2015 campaign, with her first coming in the last win over Central Arkansas on Aug. 23. Of her five saves, two came in the first half, one early on in the second and her two remaining came in the 87th and 89th minutes.
The Wolverines outshot the Aggies, 16-10, while striker Breanna McCarter led Utah Valley with three shots on the day.
UVU next hosts the University of Montana on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m., at Clyde Field. A StatBroadcast and live video can be found on the Wolverine's website.
