One 8-year-old boy will be able to throw a football and climb the monkey bars after receiving the first pediatric double-hand transplant, according to a video posted July 29 by CBS This Morning.
When he was 2 years old, Zion Harvey had an infection that necessitated the amputation of his hands and his legs below the knee.
The transplant operation requires that the person receiving the hands takes medication for the rest of their life so their body won't reject the transplant. Zion was a good candidate because he already takes anti-rejection medication for a kidney transplant he received when he was younger.
The Baltimore boy had the hand transplant operation July 27 at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
In the CBS video, Zion gives counsel to children facing adversity.
"I just want to say this: Never give up on your dreams," he said. "It will come true."
At the time of publication of this article, the video had more than 12,000 views.
