WEST VALLEY CITY — Police are investigating two damaging fires overnight in West Valley.

Fire crews first responded to a carport fire about 1:15 a.m. that destroyed three cars, West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said. Firefighters arrived to find the vehicles and the carport fully engulfed in flames, which then spread to the attic of the home at 5415 W. 4060 South.

Crews extinguished the flames but the carport and cars — which sustained $100,000 in damage — were a total loss, Vainuku said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Residents in the home and neighbors evacuated safely when they smelled smoke and heard the noise from the fire. No one was injured.

As firefighters were extinguishing hotspots at that fire they received reports of a second blaze at a barn near 2486 S. Winton St.

The structure was burned nearly to the ground and three horses inside were killed before crews arrived, Vainuku said.

Crews from Salt Lake City helped put out the fire, which also destroyed nearby storage buildings.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. An estimate of damage costs was not available.
