The Utah Valley University women's soccer team erupted in a 6-2 victory over the University of Montana on Sunday afternoon at Clyde Field. Junior striker Sheridan Fox led the way for the Wolverines, scoring two goals on the day.
The defeat marks the first time Utah Valley (3-1-0) scored six or more goals since Nov. 5, 2010, when the Wolverines defeated Delaware State, 8-0, in the Great West Conference tournament.
"We have a well-rounded offense; a lot of players who are able to contribute on the attack," head coach Brent Anderson said. "The players on this team are all capable and can put the ball in the back of the net. I thought we created some good opportunities and had players step in to score some crucial goals."
Montana (2-1-1) jumped out quickly, putting away its first goal in the fourth minute. Grizzly forward Dani Morris struck the ball perfectly from 20 yards out, sneaking it past the reach of Wolverine goalkeeper Jessica Duffin and into the top right corner.
Two minutes later, the Wolverines answered when Brown beat her defender and scored on a left-footer into the bottom right corner, tying the game in the sixth minute.
The Griz regained their lead in the 18th minute when Jenna Castillo floated a pass over the Wolverine defender, finding Mackenzie Atkins who netted a goal from 10 yards out on the right side.
The Wolverines tied the game once again at 2-2 when Fox put in her first goal on the day in the 23rd minute. Fox received the ball from Sydney Fitzpatrick with her back to the goal, turned and fired it into the lower left corner.
Utah Valley took its first lead of the game in the 35th minute, when forward Breanna McCarter placed a 50/50 ball in the top right side of the box. Sara Callister beat the goalkeeper and her defender to the ball and put it into the left corner of the net for her first goal of the season and a Wolverine 3-2 lead.
UVU furthered its lead in the 54th minute with senior Kasandra Anderson chipped in a direct kick into the top left corner of the net for the 4-2 advantage and her first goal on the season.
The Wolverines added another goal just one minute later, when Anderson took another shot that was deflected by a defender, assisting sophomore Libby Weber to redirect the ball to the top of the net over the Grizzly goalkeeper.
Utah Valley tabbed its last goal in the 83rd minute when Anderson dribbled up the left side of the field and delivered the ball to the center of the box for Fox to find her second goal of the game — her third on the season — to cap the scoring.
UVU outshot Montana, 13-7, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Wolverines begin a short stint on the road at UNLV on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. MT, and at Southern Utah on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. MT
