OREM — A Saudi Arabian exchange student has pleaded guilty in an Orem rape case.

Monsour Alshammari, 28, was sentenced to a year in jail Tuesday after pleading guilty to a felony rape charge in a deal with prosecutors, the Daily Herald reports. An obstruction of justice charge was dismissed in exchange for his plea.

Alshammari was accused of assaulting a woman at his Orem apartment after a date in February. He was arrested at the Mexican border in April. Prosecutors say he was trying to flee.

He apologized Tuesday and said that the assault wasn't intentional. He was also ordered to pay $6,000 in restitution.
