PAROWAN, Iron County — In just a few months, construction of a new solar energy facility in Parowan will be finished.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert took a tour of the Utah Red Hills Renewable Park Thursday. Once the switch is turned on, the site will be Utah's largest solar energy facility, generating enough energy to power about 18,500 homes annually.

“Energy is the foundation for a healthy economy and for a good quality life,” Herbert said. “We're blessed that we have the potential and the capability of producing energy in abundance, not only for ourselves, but for the rest of America.”

The facility, which cost $188 million, is on track to go operational in December.

The Utah Red Hills Renewable Park, being developed by Scatec Solar North America, will generate around 210 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, to be fed into the grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement with PacifiCorp’s Rocky Mountain Power, according to the utility’s obligation under the federal Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act.
