I met former Ute great Lee Grosscup in the press box at Memorial Stadium, prior to Utah’s game against Cal on Saturday.
Grosscup was a Look magazine first-team All-America quarterback for the Utes in 1957. He finished 10th in Heisman balloting that year.
He had a couple of interesting anecdotes to share. First, he is a Heisman hobbyist. He said he can name every Heisman winner since it began.
Grosscup also said he is a meticulous note-keeper. He showed me some note pads he had on this year’s Utah football team. He doesn’t keep notes on a cell phone or laptop. In fact, he doesn’t own a personal computer.
I’m going to give him an A for that.
He said he once worked at the Deseret News as an intern in the sports department.
"I always thought of becoming some kind of a writer," he said.
Grosscup has been credited with helping develop the shovel pass in football, though he admits the trick play predated his arrival.
