13-year-old boy killed in Herriman auto-pedestrian crash

HERRIMAN — A 13-year-old Riverton boy died Tuesday after being hit by a car in Herriman.

Unified police reported the boy was hit about 3:45 p.m. close to the intersection of Bobcat Drive (5085 West) and Main Street (12765 South).

The boy, a Copper Mountain Middle School student, had just stepped off the median on Main Street when he was hit by a westbound driver who didn't see him, Unified police detective Ken Hansen said.

The boy was crossing the street from the south side to the north side at the time.

Police initially found "nothing suspicious" on the part of the male driver's involvement, Hansen said, but he noted the accident scene was still being reconstructed Tuesday and that the investigation will take a few weeks.

The boy was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, he said.

A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene at one point, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene, Hansen said.

Police expected lane closures to affect traffic on Main Street until at late as 8 p.m.

The boy's name was not immediately released pending notification of his family.
