Coming off the most successful season in program history, Dixie State men’s soccer team had two players voted to the 2016 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Men’s Soccer All-West Region Team. Junior defender Bryan Baugh was voted to the D2CCA first team and will advance on to the national ballot for All-America consideration, while freshman forward Moises Medina earned second team all-West Region honors.
Baugh, who was named Pacific West Conference Defender of the Year, started in all 19 matches this season and anchored a defensive unit that allowed just 17 goals in 1723-plus minutes played (0.89 GAA - 27th-nationally). He helped lead DSU to eight shutout wins overall, including seven PacWest shutout results. On the offensive side, he tallied his second career goal earlier this season in a win vs. Fresno Pacific and dished out five assists on the year, which moved him atop DSU’s career assists list (13).
Medina, who earned PacWest Freshman of the Year honors, led Dixie State in goals (six) and points (18) and co-led in assists (six). All six of his goals, including a school-record five game-winning goals, came in PacWest play, while 16 of his 18 total points were scored in league matches. Meanwhile, his six assists tied for DSU’s single-season record, and he scored at least one point in 10 of DSU's 19 matches overall.
Dixie State (15-4-0) finished the 2016 season with a school-record 15 victories, all won consecutively after a 0-3-0 start, en route to the program’s first-ever PacWest conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The Trailblazers also set a PacWest record with 13 conference wins (13-0-0 PacWest) and became just the second PacWest school to finish a conference season unbeaten and untied, joining former league member Grand Canyon, which went 6-0-0 in the league's first season in 2006.
In all, 13 players were voted to the D2CCA All-West Region First Team, and each will now be included on the All-America ballot. The 2016 D2CCA All-America Team will be announced on Nov. 30.
The annual regional postseason awards program, sponsored by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, is voted on by the region’s Sports Information Directors. In total, 15 different West Region institutions featured at least one All-Region player this season in 2016.
The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
