Police stop ex-wife of Charlie Sheen, take her to hospital for 'evaluation'

SALT LAKE CITY — Brooke Mueller, the ex-wife of actor Charlie Sheen, was stopped by police and taken to a local hospital for an evaluation Wednesday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Troopers located Mueller, her two children and a nanny on I-15 near Nephi, the UHP said in a statement.

"The children are safe and will be released to family. Mueller was taken to an area hospital for evaluation," the statement read in part.

The announcement that Mueller had been taken to a hospital comes on the heels of reports that she was spotted acting strangely in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Her mother contacted Utah authorities and asked them to conduct a welfare check.

According to the website TMZ, Mueller's family, including Sheen, had been looking for Mueller and their two sons. Mueller currently lives in Park City. She checked into a rehab facility in the city earlier this year.

TMZ reported Wednesday that Mueller's 7-year-old twin sons were with her when she walked barefoot into a Salt Lake bar Tuesday night looking "disheveled." The boy's nanny also was with them.

Mueller then went around to several Salt Lake hotels looking for a room, according to TMZ.

On Wednesday morning, several people called Salt Lake police to report Mueller was at a car wash near 1700 South and Foothill Boulevard yelling at cars.

"They tried to get out and talk to her. She was acting different, strange," said Salt Lake police detective Robert Ungricht. "They saw her out there screaming at passersby."

Police believe Mueller may have spent the night at the Skyline Inn, 2475 E. 1700 South, near the car wash.

Earlier in the morning, Salt Lake police called Park City police to do a welfare check on Mueller. Officers checked two listed addresses for her and could not find her, Ungricht said.

By the time police arrived at the car wash, Mueller was gone.

Investigators reportedly "pinged" Mueller's cellphone and located her on I-15, according to Salt Lake police.

Ungricht originally said Mueller was not under investigation for any crimes in Salt Lake City. But after additional undisclosed details came to light Wednesday afternoon, he said she was, in fact, the subject of an open criminal investigation.
