USU cross-country: Dillon Maggard to represent Utah State at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday

Utah State cross-country will be represented by junior Dillon Maggard at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19., in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The championship races will take place at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Maggard will participate in the men’s 10-kilometer race at 10 a.m. MT.

“Dillon has worked really hard to get to this point,” Utah State veteran head coach Gregg Gensel said. “He’s not very outspoken, but he’s done a great job of leading by example and doing what he needs to do. He’s turned his life around as a person and as a runner. I’m excited to see what he can do at the national meet.”

This will mark Maggard’s first time competing at nationals, where he will become the seventh Aggie to compete at the race since 2000, joining Eric Shellhorn (2014), Brian McKenna (2011), Trever Ball (2005), Tiffany Strickland (2005), Mike Nielson (2003) and Ashley Johnson (2003).

At last week’s region championships, Maggard earned all-region honors and qualified for the national championships, placing eighth with a time of 31:02.20 in the men’s 10-kilometer race. Maggard, who was the top-male finisher from the Mountain West Conference, led the Aggies to 230 points and an eighth-place finish out of 17 teams.

Maggard looks to land inside the top 40 to earn All-America accolades. The last and only time Utah State’s men had a cross-country All-American was in 2005 when Trever Ball earned the honor, finishing 29th among Americans with a time of 30:26.1.
