Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith headline BYUtv's 'Christmas Under the Stars' special

BYUtv will have the assistance of two musical legends in kicking off the Christmas season as the first of two “Christmas Under the Stars” specials airs Friday at 6 p.m. MST. The show stars Grammy Award-winning singer Amy Grant who is joined by Michael W. Smith and newcomer Jordan Smith, who appeared on NBC’s “The Voice.”

“Bringing stars of that caliber to our air is an amazing and rare event,” said Scott Swofford, BYUtv Director of Content and Media. “They were gracious and full of good will both before and after the show, which is another rarity. … We think this show will enhance the holiday season for our entire audience."

The special was filmed in September at Salt Lake City’s Capitol Theatre, and even though the weather was warm outside, director Russ Kendall said there was still plenty of Christmas cheer.

“It was a wonderful evening,” Kendall said. “With a set of traditional Christmas carols and beloved originals, Amy, Michael and Jordan transformed the Capitol Theatre into a celebration of Christmas, leaving the audience awash in a spirit of peace, hope and joy.”

The singers were accompanied by the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of guest conductor, Kurt Bestor.

BYUtv will air another “Christmas Under the Stars” special on Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. MST, featuring BYU’s Vocal Point, joined by Peter Hollens, Ryan Innes and Madilyn Paige.
