SOUTH SALT LAKE — A woman remained hospitalized Saturday while her boyfriend was arrested for allegedly shooting her following an attempt to steal an Xbox, police say.

Victor E. Fonseca, 22, of Salt Lake City, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Saturday for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, discharging of a firearm and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person.

The couple had gone to the home of the woman's mother, near 500 East and Stanley Avenue, about 4 p.m. Friday to retrieve a cellphone, but when the mother wasn't home, the woman decided to take an X-Box belonging to another person in the house as collateral, according to South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.

The owner of the Xbox objected and blocked the woman from leaving, Keller said. An argument ensued.

Fonseca was standing outside of the apartment when he pulled out a handgun and fired two shots, one hitting the ground and the other hit his 22-year-old girlfriend in the torso, according to Keller.

The owner of the Xbox, his 14-year-old daughter and one or two other men in the home were not injured.

Fonseca and the woman left the scene with two other men in a silver car and the woman was eventually taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Fonseca was arrested at the hospital.

It was unknown Saturday whether the woman could face criminal charges upon her release from the hospital.
