PROVO — Handsome Tanielu found a way to show respect for an injured teammate during BYU's 51-9 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Tanielu, a junior-college defensive tackle who normally wears No. 92, wore the No. 91 jersey of Travis Tuiloma to honor Tuiloma, a senior who saw his Cougar career end earlier this year after a knee injury against Boise State required surgery. Tuiloma, named to the Outland Trophy watch list prior to the season, dealt with several injures in 2016 and played in just five games before the knee injury ended his time at BYU.
The back of Tanielu's jersey Saturday also included the Tuiloma nameplate.
This isn't the first time a BYU player has worn the jersey of an injured teammate to honor him. Exactly five years to the day earlier, on Nov. 19, 2011, then-sophomore linebacker Kyle Van Noy traded in his No. 3 jersey and wore the No. 1 jersey in the Cougars' 42-7 win over New Mexico State on Senior Night to honor Jordan Pendleton.
Pendleton had suffered a career-ending injury against TCU earlier that season. Like Tanielu's jersey, Van Noy's jersey that day included the Pendleton nameplate.
Linehan jokes about running into the kicker penalty
Near the end of the third quarter against UMass, BYU was forced to punt after failing to convert a third-and-7 play at the Minutemen 39-yard line. On the ensuing punt, though, UMass was flagged 5 yards for a running into the punter penalty. On review, BYU senior punter Jonny Linehan appears to take minimal, if any, contact from a UMass player before falling to the ground, drawing the flag.
The Cougars chose to bring the offense back out to try and convert a fourth-and-2 play after the penalty and were successful with a Taysom Hill-to-Mitchell Juergens pass. Later in the drive, Hill scored on a 5-yard run to give BYU a 41-9 lead.
Linehan joked about the play that drew a flag later on social media.
