USU volleyball: Utah State hosting Weber State in 2016 finale

Utah State women’s volleyball (13-16, 8-10 MW) wraps up its 2016 season on Tuesday, when the Aggies host Weber State at 7:30 p.m. The match will be Senior Night for USU, with the team set to honor its four departing seniors: outside hitter Kaylie Kamalu-Smith, setter Erica Moscoso, libero Hannah Gleason and defensive specialist Maddie Day-Larsen.

All four seniors have made an impact on the 2016 season as Kamalu-Smith is second on the team with 353 kills but leads the team overall with 3.53 kills per set. Moscoso has directed the USU attack all year, totaling 1,055 assists and bringing her career total to 1,797 to rank No. 10 all-time in school history.

Gleason and Day-Larsen have both recorded triple-digit digs for the Aggies this season, with Gleason leading the way with 427 and Day-Larsen second on the team with 208. Gleason will finish her career No. 4 all-time in career digs and currently has 1,392 for her career.

On the year, Utah State is hitting .235 (1,419-549-3,706) as a team and led by its outsides in junior Lauren Anderson and Kamalu-Smith with 359 and 353 kills, respectively. Kamalu-Smith’s 3.53 kills per set ranks sixth in the MW and Anderson ranks seven, with 3.45 per set. The duo is the only set of teammates in the top seven of the league in kills per set. Moscoso is fourth in the Mountain West with 10.88 assists per set.

Weber State is 14-12 overall and finished its Big Sky slate with an overall mark of 5-11. The Wildcats have not played a match since Nov. 12, when they lost at Sacramento State in their conference finale.

WSU is hitting .218 (1,211-472-3,387) on the year and led by junior outside Amanda Varley with 302 kills, averaging 3.25 per set. The Wildcats run a 6-2 with junior Taylor Christensen and sophomore Bailey Irwin sharing the setting duties, totaling 532 and 529 assists, respectively.

Defensively, teams have hit .187 (1,334-641-3,703) against the Wildcats on the year. Senior middle Megan Thompson leads the WSU block with 164, averaging 1.66 per set, and is followed by freshman middle Aubrey Saunders with 107, averaging 1.18 per set. Junior libero Jesse Hover leads the Weber State back row with 368 digs, averaging 3.72 per set. Junior defensive specialist Thamires Cavalcanti has also recorded more than 300 digs this season (330) and is averaging 3.59 per set.

Head coach Jeremiah Larsen is in his second season, having previously coached as an assistant at Utah State from 2011-2014. Larsen is 20-34 overall with the Wildcats.

The volleyball match on Tuesday will be preceded by a women’s basketball game, set to tip in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 5 p.m. Action will then turn to Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center for the volleyball match with the four seniors set to be recognized before the match.
