The Dixie State women’s basketball team dropped a 69-58 decision to Westminster on Friday in Salt Lake City.
The Trailblazers (0-6) trailed 18-7 late in the first quarter before junior forward Shelby Kassuba connected on a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the period to cut the lead to 18-10 after one quarter.
The teams traded baskets in the second quarter, as the Griffins pushed the lead to as many as 10 points, and DSU trimmed the deficit to five points before Westminster converted a 3-point shot to even out the eight-point advantage it held in the first quarter, taking a 33-25 lead into the locker room.
The Griffins pushed the lead 11 points again in the third quarter at 38-27, but DSU responded with a 15-6 run during the final 8:19 of the period to pull to within 44-42 at the end of the period.
Dixie State cut the lead to one point at 46-45 early in the final period when junior forward Lisa VanCampen canned a triple with 8:17 remaining, but Westminster responded with a 12-2 run to extend the lead back to double digits and clinch the victory.
The Trailblazers shot 33 percent (19-of-56) from the field, 29 percent (8-of-27) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line. VanCampen led DSU with a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds, while Kassuba added 12 points and redshirt sophomore guard Tramina Jordan scored 10 points.
Dixie State returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 3, opening Pacific West Conference play vs. Concordia in the Burns Arena.
