3 arrested for investigation of attempted murder following road rage shooting

WEST VALLEY CITY — Three people who allegedly used an assault rifle to shoot at a car with a child inside during a road rage incident have been arrested for investigation of attempted murder.

Sergio Pena Rodriguez, 20, of West Jordan, and Melquiadez Ramirez, 24, of Midvale, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of three counts of attempted murder, and failing to stop at the command of an officer. A third boy was booked into a juvenile detention facility for three counts of investigation of attempted murder. In addition, Ramirez was also booked for investigation of fleeing and DUI.

Saturday night, a couple with a child in their car was driving near 2200 West Research Way (2770 South) when another car came up behind them "honking its horn and riding her bumper," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

When the car pulled up next to the family, the wife, who was in the passenger seat, rolled down her window to tell the suspects that there was a child in her car, the report states.

The front passenger then "pulled an assault rifle up pointing it at her and making the comment that 'he didn't care,'" according to the report.

The suspects then dropped behind the family vehicle on the passenger side and fired one shot into the vehicle, the report states. The family was able to get a license plate number and called police as the alleged gunmen sped away, the report states.

West Valley police spotted the vehicle and performed a PIT manuever, disabling the fleeing vehicle by using a patrol car to bump it and make it spin out. The three occupants all ran from the car but were arrested a short time later.

Police say Ramirez was driving and had a blood-alcohol content of .152 when tested at the scene, or nearly twice the legal limit. He previously was convicted of theft for taking a car that was left running in a driveway in 2011, and for disorderly conduct in a separate case in 2014, according to court records.

Rodriguez was charged in an aggravated robbery and aggravated assault case in 2015. In that incident, a Unified police SWAT team was used to arrest him, according to court records. The case was dismissed in February, according to court records. Rodriguez was also convicted of assault in 2015 in a separate case, robbery in another 2015 case, and attempted theft in February, according to court records.
