DRAPER — A fight between four maximum security inmates at the Utah State Prison ended with three of them being stabbed and hospitalized, authorities said Tuesday.
The fight involving a homemade weapon began around 2 p.m., said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Maria Peterson.
"Correctional employees responded immediately to stop the fighting and secured the unit," Peterson said in a statement. "A prison physician was on site at the time and provided medical aid to the injured inmates."
Two inmates were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, while one was transported via medical helicopter.
Two inmates returned to the prison late Tuesday and were doing well, Peterson said. The third stabbing victim was critically injured, she said, and underwent surgery, but was stable.
The prison was placed on lockdown following the fight, Peterson said, meaning "inmates are confined to their units and movement is tightly controlled." Unified police are investigating the stabbings.
