KEARNS — A Pleasant Grove man who police say kidnapped two people, attempted to carjack another vehicle and then tried to rob a convenience store was arrested over the weekend.
Brandon Harold McKinney, 43, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of kidnapping, two counts of carjacking and one count of attempted car jacking.
Two people were putting air in the tires of their vehicle at a gas station near 300 West and 2100 South on Saturday night when McKinney jumped in their back seat, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.
"The man said, 'Start driving and no one will get hurt.' He wanted them to take him to Provo," Lohrke said.
McKinney also warned them not to call police, according to a Salt Lake County Jail booking report.
After driving for a little bit, McKinney fell asleep in the back seat, Lohrke said. The driver then went to a Chevron gas station, 4710 S. 4015 West, and told the man that they had arrived in Provo, Lohrke said.
"He gets out of the car and they sped off," he said.
While at the gas station, the attendant noticed he was acting suspiciously, according to police. McKinney walked away from the gas station but returned a short time later, prompting the attendant to call police, Lohrke said.
McKinney walked inside the gas station, and the frightened attendant hid in the bathroom, he said. While she was in the bathroom, McKinney took items from behind the counter, the jail report states.
McKinney then walked back outside and attempted to carjack another vehicle, according to the jail report, but the vehicle's owner pushed him away, Lohrke said.
An officer later found McKinney at a nearby Smith's, 4643 S. 4000 West, and arrested him.
No one was injured in any of the confrontations.
According to court records, McKinney has a lengthy history of criminal charges, mainly for drug-related crimes.
