Orem home considered a total loss following fire

OREM — A home is considered a total loss after being ravaged by fire Tuesday, authorities reported.

The fire at 324 S. Ridgecrest Drive was reported just before 3 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming out of the attic, said Orem Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Peterson.

Firefighters initially went on the offensive and tried to knock out the fire from inside the home, but they soon discovered "heavy smoke and fire coming from the basement area," Peterson said.

Fire crews were then forced to fight the fire from a defensive position. The home partly collapsed by the end of the ordeal and is considered a total loss, according to Peterson. A dollar estimate of the damage was not immediately available.

The residents of the home were traveling out of state at the time, and nobody was inside when fire crews arrived, Peterson said.

The cause of the fire was unknown Tuesday.

Crews from Pleasant Grove and Provo assisted the Orem Fire Department at the site.
