OGDEN — A Riverdale man found guilty of the city's first murder in 30 years has been sentenced to prison.

Luciano Silva, 21, was sentenced Dec. 7 to 15 years to life in prison, with an additional year added for a weapons violation, for the murder of 25-year-old Horacio Mendez Sanchez, of Logan.

Silva also was sentenced to three additional prison terms of one to 15 years, all running concurrent to each other but consecutive to the murder charge. Those are for two counts of obstruction of justice and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, all second-degree felonies.

A jury found Silva guilty on all counts on Oct. 29.

According to police, Silva told investigators the two men were together on the Riverdale Parkway Trail on Sept. 13, 2015, when they "went for a walk to go get drugs."

Silva told police he pulled out a gun to show Sanchez, and when Sanchez took the gun, he ordered Silva to give him some money he had in his pockets, according to a probable cause statement.

Silva pushed the gun out of Sanchez's hand and knocked him to the ground, then grabbed the gun and shot Sanchez as he was getting up, police said.

Silva told detectives that he then threw the gun in a nearby river, went home and put the clothes he was wearing in a backpack under his bed, the report stated.
