The league-leading Toledo Walleye defeated the Utah Grizzlies, 2-1, on Friday night at Maverik Center.
Approximately 1,128 stuffed animals were thrown onto the ice 11:59 into the second period when Mathieu Aubin (nine) scored the team’s Teddy Bear Toss goal for the second time in three years to cut the Walleye lead to 2-1.
“Tonight was a great game, and it could have went either way,” said head coach and General Manager Tim Branham. “We had our chances, they had their’s. We're going to stick with the process and we're going to be just fine here when we start playing other teams.”
The game was a goaltender battle as Utah’s Troy Redmann stopped 22-of-24 in his Utah debut and Toledo’s Cal Heeter stopped 28-of-29.
Toledo’s only two goals were scored on a power play 4:35 into the second period and on a breakaway 10:45 into the second period before the Grizzlies responded 1:14 later when Phil Pietroniro threw in a puck that was deflected off Michael Pelech and Erik Bradford before Aubin got the final touch.
Utah outshot Toledo, 29-24, in the game as the Walleye went 1-6, with Utah going 0-4.
Saturday night, when the Grizzlies play Toledo again, is another $20 combo as well as Saturday night with Santa and KSL 5.
