Arizona man killed in southeastern Utah rollover; 2 others injured

BLUFF, San Juan County — An Arizona man was killed Saturday when the vehicle he was driving rolled on state Route 191.

Danel Atene, 44, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the small passenger car when it rolled. Utah Highway Patrol investigators believe the vehicle drifted off the right side of the road and Atene over-corrected about 5:45 p.m., causing the vehicle to slide off the left side.

The car rolled several times. Atene, of Kayenta, Arizona, was ejected and died at the scene, about six miles north of Bluff.

A front-seat passenger, Clara Blackmountain, 45, of Mexican Water, Arizona, was wearing a seat belt and was seriously injured, but is expected to survive, according to troopers. A 7-year-old girl in the back seat who was not wearing a seat belt was also ejected in the rollover, but suffered only minor injuries, according to the UHP. Both were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Preliminary indications led troopers to believe the driver had been drinking alcohol, and may have also been speeding, according to the report.
