Man dies 8 days after attack at Ogden park

OGDEN — The victim of a violent beating at an Ogden park died Sunday, more than a week after the attack, police said.

Scott Kaszuba, 57, of Clearfield, died "from injuries sustained from the assault" Nov. 26 at Jefferson Park, Ogden police said in a statement on Facebook.

Charges against Jason Michael Gomez, 42, for the alleged attack will be amended, the agency said, "pending autopsy results."

Gomez was charged Nov. 29 with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.

Court documents say Kaszuba was put "on life support … with a grim prognosis" at McKay-Dee Hospital after Gomez allegedly stomped on his head "over and over again."

Gomez is also accused of repeatedly kicking and punching Kaszuba, who at one point was lying "helplessly on the ground," according to witnesses referenced in court documents.

Ogden Police Lt. Brian Eynon said the men were arguing, but he didn't know what started the dispute. The men knew each other, Eynon said, though he was unsure of the precise nature of their relationship.

The lieutenant said both men were "pretty intoxicated at the time."

Police are still seeking witnesses who may have been in contact with Kaszuba before the attack. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call Travis Kearl, Ogden police major crimes detective, at 801-629-8029.

Gomez is currently being held in the Weber County Jail. A search of court records indicates he has no prior criminal history in Utah.
