One big question mark for the BYU football team was answered Tuesday, when quarterback Taysom Hill announced via Twitter he is planning on returning to the team in 2016.
Prior to Hill's announcement, speculation about his future had run rampant. Would he seek a medical hardship waiver and return to BYU? Would Hill head to another college as a graduate transfer? Would his age and desire to play professionally entice Hill to try to enter the NFL?
Or could Hill choose to forgo the sport and move on with his post-football career?
One simple tweet made his intentions clear.
“He’s probably the greatest athlete to play the quarterback position here, no offense to Steve Young. Taysom’s put together a lot better than Steve was,” BYU first-year offensive coordinator Ty Detmer said during his introductory press availability last month.
The news set Twitter abuzz about the expected return of a player who has already set the BYU mark for rushing yards by a quarterback with 2,212 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns.
Taysom Hill back to BYU. Bravo. Says a lot about the school, the player and the education.— Dennis Dodd (@dennisdoddcbs) February 16, 2016

@Mitch_Harper I would be thunderstruck I'if Taysom Hill is the starter in Ty Detmer's offense...but that's the fun isn't it? Waiting to see?— Mark McCrady (@nomadcoug) February 16, 2016
Shocked and amazed that Taysom is returning to BYU. Great recruiting by Kalani and Ty. The QB competition will be fierce, but talent...— Dave Noriega (@davenoriega) February 16, 2016
produces wins and Taysom Hill is the most talented and athletically gifted QB BYU has ever had (Detmer's words)?— Dave Noriega (@davenoriega) February 16, 2016
He'll be the QB1, but wouldn't be surprised to see Ty occasionally use him creatively in a role like Christian McCaffrey.— Dave Noriega (@davenoriega) February 16, 2016
3rd and shorts should be a lot less stressful. Taysom running a zone-read/option is basically an automatic 3 yards https://t.co/MLHnu9w6Kq— Jace McLaws (@jacemclaws) February 16, 2016
When will Taysom be fully cleared???? Definitely not for Spring. Will put him behind 8 ball learning new O and comp. Fall will be epic— Craig Hirschi (@cjhirschi) February 16, 2016
Want to celebrate with co workers about taysom hill news then I realize I only work with yewts— Devmandude (@Devmandude) February 16, 2016
What made Steve Young elevate his game? Joe Montana. Tom Brady? Drew Bledsoe. Great QB competition refines and creates champions!— Terrell Williams (@4hill2018) February 16, 2016
Folks say that having Taysom on the team is good for a couple of extra BYU wins.— Geoff Johnston (@geoffjBYU) February 16, 2016
So... 16 wins for BYU next season then?...
Other BYU athletes, including a pair of teammates, chimed in:
Say what you wanna say..it really doesn't matter cuz he is home and staying. Much love to my brother @T_Hill4. This year is gonna be raw— Harvey Langi (@LANGI21) February 16, 2016
Taysom is back! Bring on football season! #BYUFOOTBALL— Nate Austin (@RexosaurusRex) February 16, 2016
KSL's Dave Noriega shared several highlights of the BYU quarterback following the announcement. Here's a sampling:
Spectacular hurdling touchdown by Taysom Hill. BYU leads 13-0 https://t.co/IsmuokCCRh— Dave Noriega (@davenoriega) February 16, 2016
This is where the season-ending injury occurred for Taysom Hill. https://t.co/ZJ2gFyX85u— Dave Noriega (@davenoriega) February 16, 2016
Taysom to Mitch Mathews for TD https://t.co/Pr6Ao5LbeE— Dave Noriega (@davenoriega) February 16, 2016
What will BYU do with its quarterback situation? Tanner Mangum, who will be a sophomore in 2016, was 8-4 as a starter after Hill went down with a Lisfranc injury in the first game of the 2015 season.
Dying to see how Ty Detmer uses Tanner and Taysom. Taysom in option packages? Just choose the best and start them? Play the hot hand?— Manumaleuna (@hairywhiteman) February 16, 2016
I have mixed feelings abt Taysom coming back. I dont want to stunt Mangum's growth & I have a feeling the new O will favor Mangum's skills— Nick Lee (@NickLee51) February 16, 2016
There was even some talk of a possible position change for the versatile Hill.
@desnewssports He could have a huge year as a TE in the new system or at safety next to Nacua where he could help quarterback the secondary.— Kenneth Stillwell (@kstillwell_9) February 16, 2016
One option is to move Taysom Hill from QB to slot or RB. BYU can still use his speed and playmaking while keeping Tanner Mangum at QB. #BYU— John Coon (@johncoonsports) February 16, 2016
If Sitake doesn't have a package that has both Taysom and Tanner on the field at the same time I will be very disappointed.— Jeremiah (@SYRmotsag) February 16, 2016
@LilBushBushman the other positions he has size for is running back and linebacker. Don't see him doing that tho, to many hits— Brandon M (@Bmont03Utah) February 16, 2016
Not everyone, though, saw the announcement as a good thing.
