The No. 10/13-ranked Dixie State baseball team saw its season-opening winning streak come to an end at the hands of No. 3-ranked Colorado Mesa, 2-1 in 10 innings, on Friday afternoon in Grand Junction.

DSU (10-1) and the Mavericks (7-1) were locked in a scoreless pitcher’s duel through the first five innings before the Storm broke through in the top half of the sixth when junior outfielder Miles Bice singled home senior first baseman Sam Hall with one out to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

Junior right-hander Dylan File (ND) was dominant through seven innings as he held CMU to just four hits with eight strikeouts. File pitched into the eighth, retiring the first two batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk to CMU leadoff hitter Alex Fife. Fife advanced to second on a wild pitch, and after a Storm pitching change, Fife came around to score the tying run on a crucial two-out throwing error on the DSU infield on what would have been the third out of the inning.

After DSU was retired in order in its half of the ninth, the Mavericks loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of hits and a hit batter. However, Storm senior closer Jeremy Alderman (ND) preserved the tie by striking out Trevor Elcock to force extra innings. Dixie State was again set down in order in the 10th, and again CMU loaded the bases with two outs thanks to an error, a base hit and a hit batter. But this time the Mavericks cashed in as Zach McLeod ended the game with a single down the left field line to drive home the winning run.

DSU was outhit for the first time this season, 8-6, with junior DH Ryan Rodriguez picking two of the Storm’s six safeties to go with a walk. Senior reliever Spencer Greer (L, 1-1) took the loss after surrendering an unearned run in the 10th. Both CMU runs on the day were unearned.

Dixie State and Colorado Mesa continue their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, at Suplizio Field.
