SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah’s Department of Communication will bestow its 2015 Service to Journalism award on Rick Hall, former managing editor of the Deseret News, at its 61st annual awards banquet at the Little America Hotel on Tuesday, April 5.

During his career at the Deseret News, Hall covered sports and rewrote copy before climbing the management ladder, first as state and regional editor, then as associate city editor, city editor, assistant managing editor and finally managing editor. He retired last year.

During the banquet, the department will also present its Quintus C. Wilson Alumni Achievement Award to Tatiana Kireiev Miller, operations manager at Mark Miller Subaru; Michael Waterman, senior director of communication for CHG Healthcare; and Karen Hale, former state senator and former director of communication for Salt Lake City.

Former Salt Lake Mayor Ralph Becker and his wife, Kate Kopischke, a professional mediator and dispute resolution specialist, will be given the department’s Distinguished Service Award for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to Utah and the Intermountain West.

University students who have won awards or scholarships, and new members of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national honor society for students in journalism and mass communication, will also be recognized.
