WCC coaches name Kyle Collinsworth and Lexi Eaton Rydalch conference players of the year

PROVO — BYU swept the Player of the Year awards in the West Coast Conference for both the men’s and women’s teams.

The WCC announced Tuesday that Kyle Collinsworth and Lexi Eaton Rydalch were named the league’s top players, respectively.

Collinsworth also received All-WCC First-Team honors along with senior guard Chase Fischer and freshman guard Nick Emery was named to the All-WCC Second Team and All-WCC Freshman Team.

On the women's side, BYU coach Jeff Judkins was named Coach of the Year and Kalani Purcell was named WCC Newcomer of the Year. It marked Judkins’ first coach of the year award since the Cougars joined the WCC.

Rydalch and Purcell were named to the 2015-16 All-WCC Women’s Basketball First Team with Makenzi Morrison Pulsipher being named to the Second Team. Kylie Maeda was an All-WCC Honorable Mention selection.

“It really means a lot to me when I see four of the top 15 players in the league come from our team,” Judkins said. “It was awesome to see that. I was probably more proud of that than I was winning Coach of the Year and all of the other awards.”

Rydalch led the conference in scoring with 24.6 points per game, ranked second in 3-point field goals made (2.4) and eighth in assists (3.2).

Rydalch was honored to be selected as Player of the Year.

“It’s awesome. Our conference is a great conference,” she said. “There’s tons of good players so it’s really special to be picked for that.”

Purcell led the league in rebounding (12.8) and in assists (5.4). She ranked first in defensive rebounds (9.7) and fourth in offensive boards (3.1), was tied for fifth place in blocked shots (1.0) and was sixth in both steals (2.3) and field goal percentage (.452)

During conference play, Collinsworth averaged 15.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 7.6 assists and 2.0 steals. He led the league in assists and steals and was third in rebounds. He is the NCAA triple-double season and career-record holder and he posted three triple-doubles and seven double-doubles in WCC play.

Fischer was among the top scorers and shooters in the league as he finished fifth in scoring in league play at 18.7 points per game.

Conference honors are based on league games only and the awards are voted on by the league’s coaches.

The men's Coach of the Year was Saint Mary's Randy Bennett, the Defensive Player of the Year was Gonzaga's Eric McClellan and Saint Mary's Newcomer of the Year was Joe Rahon.
