West Jordan announces plans for new rec center, public works building

WEST JORDAN — Mayor Kim Rolfe has announced the city has approved an agreement with an architectural firm to design a new aquatics and recreation center at Ron Wood Park, 5900 West and New Bingham Highway.

The new facility will be owned and operated by the city rather than Salt Lake County, which owns an operates the Gene Fullmer Recreation Center.

Five firms submitted proposals, and a design review committee selected one from Salt Lake-based VCBO Architecture. The firm has designed three similar projects in the state — the Provo Recreation Center, the South Davis Recreation Center and the West Valley Family Fitness Center.

“After touring the Provo Rec Center with members of the City Council and city staff, I’m excited to work with VCBO to build a similar facility here,” Rolfe said in a statement.

Details, such as membership costs, specific programs and funding mechanisms, are still being discussed, the mayor said.

The city also announced plans to build a new public works facility to house water, sewer, stormwater and street operations. The facility will be built on city-owned property to the north of the existing public works building at 8030 S. 4000 West.
