SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah School of Dentistry has named a new dean.

Dr. Wyatt Rory Hume, who has directed dental schools in California, the Middle East and Australia, will lead the school as it continues to grow and serve the community.

"This is a unique and very appealing opportunity to continue the process of building a great school of dentistry within the vibrant and successful academic and health care environment that exists at the University of Utah," Hume said, adding that he's looking forward to the challenge and opportunity that awaits.

Hume received degrees from the University of Adelaide in South Australia and then went to the University of California, Los Angeles for a postdoctoral pharmacology fellowship. He joined the faculty at the UCLA School of Dentistry and later worked at universities in Adalaide and Sydney and New South Wales, in Australia. He became department chairman at the University of California, San Francisco and then dean at UCLA's dental school.

He will begin his work at the U. on May 15.

The U.'s School of Dentistry opened in 2013 and expects its first graduates in 2017. Doctors Glen Hanson and Lynn Powell have served as deans in the interim after Dr. Rena D'Souza left in 2014 to serve as an associate vice president of research at the U.'s School of Medicine.
