Provo School District makes changes to gifted programs

PROVO — After spending several months studying the Provo School District’s programs for gifted students, district leaders are announcing changes and expansion of the programs.

Provo Unlimited Progress, a seventh- through eighth-grade magnet program, will move to the middle schools from Provo High. During the 2016-17 school year, the program will be developed to be ready to accept incoming seventh-graders in the 2017-18 school year. Eighth-graders can choose to finish the program at Provo High that year.

In February, district leaders sought input from stakeholders in gifted programs by surveying parents, students and educators in gifted programs. The survey asked how programs could be improved, how they should not be changed, what components were critical, and how well the programs were serving the students. This information helped district leaders determine how to proceed in planning for future gifted programs and indicated a high degree of support for the programs, furthering the board’s and staff’s desire to provide services to identified students.
