The Quad City Mallards (26-23-3-2) defeated the Utah Grizzlies (30-22-2-2), 4-2, on Wednesday evening at iWireless Center.

The Grizzlies were awarded a power-play 14 seconds into the contest, and things quickly went south as Quad City scored two shorthanded goals in 11 seconds to build a 2-0 lead 1:14 into the contest.

Utah answered with a power-play goal from Charles Sarault (15) to make it 2-1 just moments later at 5:35 with assists going to Mike Ratchuk and Ryan Hayes. Quad City made it 3-1 with 2:48 left in the first as the Grizzlies were unable to cleanly clear their zone.

The Grizzlies again got within one at 3-2 on Barry Almeida’s 20th of the season with 3:44 left in the second, and that was the score going to the third as Sarault and Alex Krushelnyski added assists.

Mark Owuya kept the Grizzlies in the contest with some spectacular third period saves, including two with Utah on a 1:37 five-on-three shorthanded situation. Twenty-one seconds after going back to five-on-five, a Grizzlies defenseman inadvertently kicked a puck in to give the Mallards their two goal lead back at 4-2.

With four goals allowed, in which he was put in very compromising situations on all four, Owuya takes the loss in goal for Utah but still stopped 33-of-37.

The Grizzlies return home Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12, to host Colorado.
