GARDEN CITY, Rich County — A Utah State University student died after crashing into a tree Thursday afternoon at Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, police said.

Tyson Lloyd Shoemaker, 18, of Camano Island, Washington, veered from a resort ski run and into a tree around 1:50 p.m., according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

Other skiers witnessed Shoemaker's crash and contacted the Logan Canyon resort's ski patrollers, who arrived to find him unresponsive.

"Immediate lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful," Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson said in a statement. "Investigators have been to the scene and talked to witness(es). At this time we are investigating this incident as an unfortunate accident."

Shoemaker was attending Utah State and living in Logan, Peterson said.

The state medical examiner's office will determine Shoemaker's cause of death, according to the lieutenant.
