Craig Brinkerhoff’s two-run double capped a three-run eighth inning, helping Utah Valley University edge Utah, 7-6, on Wednesday night at Smith’s Ballpark.
After Justin Erlandson tripled home Mark Krueger, Brinkerhoff doubled to left to score Erlandson and Spencer Gothberg for the game-winning RBIs. The win gives the Wolverines (14-12) a 4-2 mark against the Pac-12 so far this season.
“Utah’s a good team and they’re playing well and it’s always good to win an in-state game,” UVU head coach Eric Madsen said. “We overcame a few tough situations on the mound and the guys made some good adjustments at the plate and came away with big hits. Now we have to get ready for a big weekend against North Dakota.”
Evan Fresquez picked up his first win for the Wolverines (14-12), while Matt Davidson pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first career save. Trenton Stoltz (0-1) took the loss for the Utes (7-14) after allowing the three runs in the eighth.
Utah Valley finished with 10 hits, with nine different players collecting hits with two from Krueger. Utah had 14 hits on the night with Dallas Carroll finishing 4-for-5.
Down 2-0 early, the Wolverines got a single run in the fourth when Ryne Edmondson singled home Bogden. That was answered with two from the Utes in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out single and a bases loaded walk.
The Wolverines rallied with two down in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Edmondson worked a walk with Bogden on first before Gothberg bounced a single up the middle to score Bogden and make it 4-2. Jake Atkinson then delivered a two-out, two-run triple to right center to tie it.
Utah scored twice in the seventh to take the lead. Carroll doubled with one out and then scored on a base hit by Hunter Simmons. Cody Scaggari singled with two outs to score Simmons and gave the Utes a 6-4 lead before the three-run eighth for the Wolverines.
The teams will meet two more times this season including next Tuesday, April 5, at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem.
UVU returns home to host North Dakota in a three-game WAC series starting Friday at 6 p.m. MT. The game starts a stretch of 14 of the next 18 games at home for the Wolverines.
