SALT LAKE CITY — A bill naming the House building on Capitol Hill for the late Utah House Speaker Becky Lockhart was approved unanimously Friday by a Senate committee.

"She broke the mold when she was elected speaker of the House," the sponsor of HB322, Rep. Susan Duckworth, D-Magna, told members of the Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Committee.

Duckworth said the tribute to Lockhart is fitting because of her love for the state Capitol, which included sometimes taking over tours so she could point out the historic building's features to visitors.

Lockhart died in her home at age 46 in January 2015, from an unrecoverable and extremely rare neurodegenerative brain disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or CJD.

The bill, which has already passed in the House, would name the House building the "Rebecca D. Lockhart House Building." It now goes to the full Senate.
