Tour of Utah to feature 12 top cycling teams

SALT LAKE CITY — Twelve top teams are coming to the 2016 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, including four UCI WorldTour teams that finished in the top 12 of last year’s Tour de France.

Defending Tour of Utah champion Joe Dombrowski also returns with his Cannondale Pro Cycling Team.

“The Tour of Utah was the highlight of my season; and thus far, probably one of the biggest highlights of my career,” Dombrowski said in a statement. “It was my first win of anything as a pro and my first General Classification win for the overall and stage race. So it was really exciting for me. It has been billed as ‘America’s Toughest Stage Race,’ and that’s pretty accurate.”

Four more teams will be announced later this spring for the Tour of Utah, which will be held Aug. 1-7.

The 2015 race set an attendance record with 380,000 spectators over the seven days of racing and is free to all spectators.

Now entering a second year as a UCI 2.HC men’s stage race, the Tour of Utah is one of the top two events on the America Tour for the international governing body of cycling. The event was the only stage race in North America to feature start-to-finish live webcasting, viewed by users from 139 countries, in addition to 21 hours of national television coverage by FOX Sports and FOX Sports Networks.

The Tour of Utah has been sanctioned by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) since 2011; this year’s edition feature ranked teams from the UCI WorldTour, UCI America Tour and Continental teams on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar.

Among the UCI World Tour teams coming to Utah, BMC Racing, which took second at the 2015 Tour of Utah, was ranked No. 6 in 2015. Trek-Segafredo was No. 13, while Dombrowski’s Cannondale Pro Cycling Team checked in at No. 16. Switzerland’s IAM Cycling, which made its second appearance last year at the Tour de France and finished ninth in the team classification and will make its Tour of Utah debut, was 17th.

UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling ranked fourth among the professional continental teams on the UCI America Tour that will be in Utah, and Team Novo Nordisk (USA) ranked 38th.

With the UCI continental teams, Holowesko l Citadel Racing Team presented by Hincapie Sportswear was No. 1 on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar in 2015, followed by Rally Cycling (2), Team Jamis (4), Jelly Belly Cycling presented by Maxxis (6), Lupus Racing (9) and Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling (14).

Race rosters for all teams are expected in July.

“It’s an honor to have such a prestigious field of teams confirmed early in the year for the Tour of Utah,” said Jenn Andrs, executive director of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. “We hear so much positive feedback from teams around the world about the welcoming host venues, stunning scenery and competitive courses in Utah. We look forward to announcing the final field of 16 competitive teams for a great week of racing in August.”
