Letter: Ending tuberculosis threat

Dr. Leckman’s letter about tuberculosis makes it clear that we need to act now to end this threat ("Controlling TB," April 2). Tuberculosis is on the rise in America, where one case of the multi-drug resistant variety can cost $1 million to treat. But we can control this disease. Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, says we are at the tipping point to do just that now. Of course it will take continued funding for the Global Fund and other tuberculosis initiatives to reach this result. But it will be cheaper to do it now than wait until it spirals out of control. Citizens can make a difference in this battle by calling or writing their representatives and senators, asking them to act now to fund these initiatives of global health. Waiting will just increase the costs in lives lost and dollars needed to win this fight.
