HIGHLAND — Five local golfers moved on to the sectional stage of the U.S. Open qualifying with low scores at the local qualifying tournament Monday at Alpine Country Club.
Former State Amateur champions and BYU golfers Jordan Rodgers and Joe Parkinson led the way with 5-under-par 67s and were joined by Preston Alder, Mitchell Schow and Clay Ogden.
Alder, a BYU golfer from Boise, shot a 68, while Schow and Ogden came in at 69, along with 17-year-old Rhett Rasmusssen.
Schow, who is graduating from Park City High School and Ogden, a two-time Utah Open champion, survived a sudden-death playoff in which Rasmussen was eliminated.
Rasmussen is the first alternate, while Utah State golfer Seokwon Jeon, who shot 70, is the second alternate. In all, 96 golfers tried to qualify at Alpine.
Five golfers finished at 71, including CJ Lee, John Owen, Dan Horner, Roger Dorman and Darrin Overson.
Rodgers, Parkinson, Alder, Schow and Ogden will next play in one of the 10 U.S. Open sectional tournaments on June 6. If they can get through that stage, they will play in the U.S. Open June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh.
