Anytime you can get 10 points on the first day, it’s great. We feel very good because we have all five teams in the semis. We just expect to give it our all and let the chips fall where they may. It was a lot of fun today. – Timpview head coach Rob Sperry

SALT LAKE CITY — It’s no surprise that Timpview is leading the state 4A tennis tournament again, considering its outstanding record of the past decade, although it a bit surprising how much the T-Birds are dominating the competition.

Winners of 10 of the last 12 4A state titles, Timpview expected some hand-wringing in Friday’s first round, but the T-Birds won all 10 matches without dropping a set and have a commanding lead going into Saturday’s semifinals and finals at Liberty Park.

The T-Birds got the maximum 10 points and lead Skyline and Maple Mountain with seven points, while Woods Cross has six points. That may not seem like a lot, but the big difference is that Timpview has all five spots filled for Saturday — all three singles and both doubles teams — while the top three contenders only have two teams left.

“Anytime you can get 10 points on the first day, it’s great,” said Timpview coach Rob Sperry. “We feel very good because we have all five teams in the semis. We just expect to give it our all and let the chips fall where they may. It was a lot of fun today.”

Sperry is taking nothing for granted, however, saying, “We still have a lot of work to do because the points are doubled in the semifinal and finals.”

Two of the key matches will come at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Timpview’s Skyler Johnson and Nate Austin will play Sam Pugsley and Taft Holzer of Woods Cross, while the T-Birds’ Jordan Sagers and Jorun Christian will take on Thomas Hall and Connor Alder from Skyline at No. 2 doubles. Loses in either of those matches will allow contenders to close the gap on Timpview.

Timpview freshman Josh Pearce faces a tough road at No. 1 singles, going against Provo senior Aaron Kelemen, who he needed three sets to defeat in two matches in the past two weeks. If he gets past that match, he’ll likely have to play Mountain View’s Jon Dollahite, who has won three straight state titles. Dollahite meets Skyline’s Ryan Boddington in the semifinals.

Boddington was involved in one of the most exciting matches Friday, as he came back to knock off Woods Cross’ Jakob Kempema 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. After losing the first set, Boddington won the tiebreaker 13-11 before taking the third set.

At No. 2 singles, junior Travis Wardop will try to earn some points for the T-Birds against Christian Craig of Orem, while Maple Mountain’s Eric Whiting takes on Tanner O’Brian of Timpanogos in the other semifinal.

Timpview junior Scotty Wynn won both of his matches Friday 6-0, 6-1 and he’ll face East’s Ayden Armstrong in No. 3 singles. Both players are undefeated this year. Maple Mountain’s Brigham Perry and Orem’s David Abbott play in the other semifinal.

Matches begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with finals matches starting around 11 a.m.
