Man found shot to death in Cottonwood Heights parking lot

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A 31-year-old man was found dead in the passenger seat of a car parked at a credit union early Friday.

Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Ryan Shosted said Mauricio Martinez was shot and his death is being treated as a homicide.

Construction workers found an abandoned vehicle in the parking lot of Mountain America Credit Union, 6440 S. 3000 East, about 7 a.m. and called police. Shosted said police do not yet know how long the vehicle had been in the parking lot or how long the man had been dead when his body was found.

"It does appear the crime may have occurred elsewhere and they ended up here," he said.

Shosted said it initially appeared the bank was picked at random and was not a part of the crime. Detectives were checking the bank's surveillance video Friday to see if it captured the car driving into the lot.

Alejandro Guardado, 31, was identified Friday night as a person of interest in the case. Investigators believe Guardado was driving the car Martinez was in at the time of the shooting. Cottonwood Heights police are seeking the public's help identifying his whereabouts.

Shosted said police are also looking for a 2005-10 Chrysler 300 that is blue or black, with a silver or gold front fender. He did not say Friday how investigators came up with that vehicle description.
