Here are five movies from various platforms that families may want to consider, as recommended by the Deseret News features department and Ok.com. Because not all are appropriate for younger children, age recommendations are included.
The superhero craze continues with the recent release of "Captain America: Civil War." Not all characters have extraordinary powers and gadgets, but most heroes possess great bravery and use that power to save others. Here are five films that feature characters with superpowers for families to consider.
Amazon Video: 'The Incredibles'
A family with superpowers must live undercover as civilians in the Superhero Relocation Program. The dad, longing to return to his previous career, is offered a secret mission, but things are not as they seem, and soon his family must save the world. The Dove Foundation awarded the film its "Family-Approved" seal for all ages and referred to the "The Incredibles" as an "incredible" movie, reminiscent of "the cartoons of yesteryear when good triumphed over evil." The website notes that the family has to acknowledge their powers and work together in order to "experience the fulfillment of being who they were meant to be." Ok.com recommends the animated film for viewers ages 6 and older.
Netflix: 'Spy Kids'
Siblings must rescue their secret-agent parents who disappeared while trying to find other spies. The Dove Foundation says this film “in which the kids are the heroes” is one that teaches the importance of family relationships, stating that while the film contains “fantasy action and a bit of violence,” the action and different gadgets portrayed “keep the kids interested.” Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 8 and older.
Amazon Video: 'Turbo'
After a freak accident leaves a bored snail with super-speed, he sets out to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Parents Television Council says “Turbo” is a “family-friendly delight, which unlike many movies allegedly made for children today, contains no profanity or adult innuendo.” The website cites themes of “working hard and sticking to one’s dreams” among the film’s highlights. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 5 and older.
Amazon Video: 'Megamind'
A supervillain finally defeats his nemesis, but with no hero to fight, he creates a new opponent. Parent Previews refers to “Megamind” as a “twist to the superhero genre” that teaches that “although a tiger can’t change its stripes, even bad people can do some surprisingly good things when given the opportunity.” The film is rated PG for action and some language. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 7 and older.
Amazon Video: 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief'
A teenage boy who is the son of a Greek god, travels to the Underworld to retrieve a stolen lightning bolt and save his mother. Common Sense Media acknowledges the film's great special effects and actors but cautions that the movie adaptation of a popular book series falls short. The film is rated PG for action violence and peril, some scary images and suggestive material, and mild language. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 8 and older.
