SALT LAKE CITY — Two men were charged with murder Friday in the death of a 31-year-old man whose body was found in a parked car at a Cottonwood Heights credit union last month.
Jorge Arturo Castanon-Serrano, 35, and Marco Antonio Garcia, 25, were charged in 3rd District Court with murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies.
On May 27, Salt Lake police were alerted around 7 a.m. that a body had been found in a vehicle parked at Mountain America Credit Union, 6440 S. 3000 East, charges state.
Officers identified the body as Mauricio Martinez. Medical examiners confirmed Martinez died of a gunshot wound to the neck, according to court documents.
Investigators believe Castanon-Serrano and Garcia were involved in a "robbery gone bad." Both men admitted to police they planned to set up Martinez and another witness to be robbed at gunpoint at 1032 S. Redwood Road, where Martinez was shot, charges state. The men stated they intended to take Martinez's money and vehicle.
Charges did not explain how the men may have known each other, how the robbery turned into a fatal shooting, or which of the man investigators believe shot Martinez.
