Two children injured when truck plows into SUV

MURRAY — Two children were hospitalized with minor injuries Monday after the car they were riding in was smashed from behind by a box truck.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers say if not for the camp trailer the SUV was hauling that cushioned the blow, the injuries would likely have been significantly worse.

About 12:15 p.m., an SUV pulling a 19-foot camp trailer came to a quick stop because of a separate crash on northbound I-15 near 5700 South. A box truck behind the camper, however, did not stop in time, according to the UHP.

"The box truck hit into the camp trailer, destroying it, and went partly into the back of the SUV," UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said.

A boy, estimated to be about 3 years old, and a 13-year-old were taken to Primary Children's Hospital with minor injuries, according to the UHP. An infant child who was also in the back seat, in a car seat, was not injured.

Debris from the crash covered all northbound lanes. The UHP had to call in a front loader to clear the road.

The driver of the box truck was cited for investigation of several violations, including following too closely and going too fast for conditions.
