Fire rips through Kearns home

KEARNS — A fast-moving fire gutted the home of a family of three Tuesday.

Neighbors called to report the fire at 5865 S. Cougar Lane about 2 p.m., Unified Fire Authority Captain Dan Brown said.

As fire crews arrived on the scene, the family — which had escaped the home safely — was collecting their pets, Brown said.

Flames were already moving across the back of the split-level home and shooting from the windows.

"The fire was extensive by the time we got there, but we put it out in about 10 minutes," he said. "It was a lot of fire."

Damage was estimated up to $150,000, but the home may not be a total loss, according to Brown. The estimate includes two cars and a shed that were also destroyed.

One cat was killed in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation but was not considered to be suspicious, Brown said.

As firefighters worked in 99-degree weather, precautions were taken to prevent heat-related injury, the captain said. No injuries or medical issues were reported among fire crews.

Crews from West Valley City and West Jordan also helped fight the fire. The Red Cross of Utah was assisting the displaced family.
